Matt Fitzpatrick closed the primary day of the RBC Canadian Open one stroke behind chief Wyndham Clark, whereas defending champion Rory McIlroy was tied for fifth.
Clark opened with a run of 5 birdies in 9 holes and ended the day bogey-free on 63, whereas Fitzpatrick began and completed with birdies to comply with carefully behind.
It was three years to the day since Northern Eire’s McIlroy lifted the trophy, with the pandemic cancelling the final two years of the championship.
On Thursday he completed with a spherical of 66 tied with Tony Finau, Lee Hodges and Mackenzie Hughes.
In 2019, McIlroy carded a shocking last spherical of 61 at Hamilton Golf and Nation Membership to seal a seven-shot triumph.
Final month, Fitzpatrick missed out on his first main title by two strokes within the US PGA Championship at Southern Hills.
